my case studies

Here is my take on the problem statements which were of particular interest to me. For ease of scanning, these have been structured as follows:
Metrics
Approach
Recommendations
Artefacts
Individuals with hearing loss feel excluded from podcast apps
Currently individuals with hearing loss are totally being cut off from podcasts in their basic structure as they are not able to access the content in its auditory form.
Metrics
  • Capturing a new user segment who prefers to access the podcast content in a visual - text based form
Approach
Understanding the potential user opportunity
  • According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 466 million people worldwide – 5.5% of the population – have disabling hearing loss, and this number is expected to rise to 1 in 4 by 2050.
  • Hearing loss affects 48 million people in the United States alone, as per the Center for Hearing and Communication.
  • Numbers suggest that this is a massive global user opportunity. Solving this problem will open up a new user segment (individuals with hearing loss) for Google Podcasts.
  • Also, apart from individuals with hearing loss, a segment of normal podcast listeners prefer to access podcast content in text based form along with audio. (Check user stories in document)
Approach
Analyzing the competitive scenario
  • As of 2020, Spotify is the most preferred podcast listening app in the USA. Followed by Apple Podcast at 2nd and Google Podcast at 3rd position.
  • Spotify is planning to build a solution with a goal of making Spotify available to "everyone", and has already started conducting user research with people with disabilities.
Recommendations
Podcast Transcripts
  • Podcast transcript is a word-for-word text version of what is spoken in the podcast. Users can scroll through it.
  • Transcript text will be highlighted according to podcast's audio.
  • Transcript will have timestamps, so that users can skip the podcast audio to a desired section by clicking on timestamp associated with it.
  • Users can mute / unmute podcast audio while reading the transcript. They can also customize transcript font, size and highlighter colour.

Viewers are recommended reels which they aren’t interested in
Viewers are not happy with current reels recommendations, they expect these recommendations to be personalized.
Metrics
  • Improving reels customer satisfaction score
  • Increasing average reels watch time per week per user
Approach
Understanding why this problem exists
  • Currently Instagram uses a variety of algorithms, classifiers, and processes, each with its own purpose to provide reels recommendations to viewers.
  • These algorithms, classifiers, and processes heavily rely on user behaviors.
  • Not asking viewers about their interests and heavily relying on user behaviors is the prime reason behind this problem.
Recommendations
Reels Categorization
  • Reels Creators will have to select the category of reel based on its content type, before uploading it.
  • Viewers will be provided with an option to choose reels categories they are interested in watching.
  • With this data (category of reel and viewers interest) we can now strengthen our algorithms, classifiers, and processes to provide personalized reels recommendations to viewers and also ensure that creators reels reach the right set of viewers.

Users are sceptical about the quality of groceries
Supr Daily is a daily grocery delivery service in India.
Metrics
  • Increase the number of orders from rare users
  • Increase the number of new users who order at least once
Approach
Understanding why this problem exists
  • When users buy groceries from local stores, they can check the quality and handpick the best groceries themselves. Which is not possible when they order groceries online.
  • Users are unaware about the processes Supr Daily follows to make sure best quality groceries are delivered to their customers.
  • Unawareness is one of the biggest reason behind users feeling sceptical about the qualities of groceries.
Recommendations
Process Explainer Video
  • Through this video we will explain all the processes Supr Daily follows to make sure the best quality groceries are delivered to users.
  • It will be a short video ≤ 60 sec.
  • This video will be located on home screen in featured section.
  • Every time user opens the app, Process Explainer Video will be the first card they see in featured section.

My Product Observations

Forest knows the best time to ask its users for rating them on Play Store
Forest is an app helping you stay away from your smartphone and stay focused on your work
  • When users successfully complete their first 2 tasks, they are presented with a “surprise gift” which can be unlocked for free
  • At this moment users delight level is very high because they were not expecting any gift
  • When the gift is successfully unlocked, a pop up is presented which says “If you feel we’re also working hard on the app, please leave us a good comment on the store!” with an “Encourage us” button
  • As users delight level is very high, the possibility of users giving a high rating and writing a good review increases
How Truecaller helps users in making informed decisions
Truecaller is the leading global platform for verifying contacts and blocking unwanted communication
  • Truecaller’s Availability feature lets users know whether the person they are about to call is currently busy or not
  • A red bell icon indicates that the person’s phone is in silent mode, a red phone icon indicates that the person is already on a call, and it also displays the last time that user was active in the app
  • People are so busy these days! meetings, ongoing calls, study time. Thanks to Truecaller, we can now make well informed decisions whether it is a good time to call someone or not
Swiggy Instamart displays regional names of fruits and vegetables
Swiggy Instamart is Swiggy’s grocery initiative. It promises to deliver your orders in 15-30 mins
  • Swiggy Instamart includes regional names of fruits and vegetables in brackets along with their common English names
  • Every state has their own regional names for these fruits and vegetables. So, Instamart changes these regional names according to each state
  • Example of how Ginger is displayed in these 2 states : Tamil Nadu → Ginger (Inji), Maharashtra → Ginger (Ale)
  • This is helpful especially for the users who only know regional names of fruits & vegetables
Psychological trick used in LinkedIn
LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network with 774+ million members in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide
  • In “Who viewed your profile” section, LinkedIn shows us profiles of people who visited our profile. Only 1 or 2 profiles are visible rest all are blurred
  • Blurring of profiles is a psychological trick known as "Curiosity Gap"
  • The curiosity gap is the space between what users know and what they want or need to know. Gaps cause pain, and to take it away, users need to fill the knowledge gap
  • Blurring of profiles makes users curious. These blurred profiles can only be seen after users upgrade to LinkedIn Premium. This is one of the trick LinkedIn plays to convert its normal users into premium users
